The transparent case allows the user to view maps and features an attached carabineer clip for easy attachment to a backpack or day pack. To use remove the compass from the base and set it vertically or horizontally to the desired position. When you place the compass on the base it assumes the form of a spotting scope with the ability to aim at any object.
