A cutoff point is stamped on the back of the gage stripper paper so you won't accidentally trim too far and have a frayed edge on your brass. A portion of the trimmer gauge is designed to be left over so you can punch it to the desired length with your calipers. A portion of the gauge shaft will always be engaged to the shell holder so it doesn't get lost.
