The .40 S&W is a rimless pistol cartridge developed jointly by Smith & Wesson and Winchester. It was developed from the ground up as a law enforcement cartridge designed to duplicate performance of the FBI reduced-velocity 10mm Auto cartridge, and which could be retrofitted into medium-frame semi-automatic handguns. This cartridge is loaded with a 180 grain flat point projectile, a bullet commonly associated with range use. These cartridges are loaded to SAAMI specifications, with brass cases and are boxer primed.
